Tamy Chung

Owner of maca

Tamy Chung is the owner of maca in Somerville. maca is located in Bow Market with the cutest, bright pink door you have ever seen. I have tasted macarons all the way in Paris at Laduree, and I have to say maca are some of my favorites. Not to mention the queen behind these small round treats is sassy and fun. Her energy hypes me up so much.

Macarons are extremely difficult to make, because there are so many outside forces to consider. Tamy does it with ease—she’s truly a macaroon master. She eyes all the ingredients and stays cognizant of the weather, yes the weather, the humidity can affect the sweet treats. And she says if she rushes the recipes they won’t cooperate. Meringue is a plant, so she says it can sense if you are rushing and what not…I don’t understand completely, but the message is clear—-this ain’t no chocolate chip cookie, you can’t rush these small cakes. The ingredients are simple, but the technique is where the deliciousness is born.

Tamy worked in restaurants as a teenager, but when she left for college accounting was her path. Or so she thought. She hated sitting at a desk for 8+ hours, and took a holiday cookie cooking class. When she got there she realized she signed up for the wrong class. She was trying to take a class on a variety of holiday cookies, but signed up for macarons instead. (Now we know that was probably the best mistake of her life.) Back to the class—she didn’t like the flavors they made in class so she went home and practiced others. That’s when she started giving them as gifts, and it morphed into a side hustle. Until eventually she was ready to make this her career. In 2016 she filed the paperwork, and the rest is history.

Tamy’s creativity is unmatched. Her flavors are endless, and her creations are gorgeous. She says most of her inspiration comes from her customers and Instagram followers. AND the collabs you guys!!! She does major amazing collabs—like macaron icecreams, and cakes, and the list goes on & on.

Tamy is a firecracker. A girl from a small town who chased her dream. She listened to her intuition, and look what she made. A true example of the saying anything is possible!
